Bloxom, Virginia 1884 Accomack County
When the railroad first ran it's way down the Eastern Shore of Virginia opportunity blossomed for many small towns. The Town Square was rented for $1 to the railroad. The Post Office was established and the Town was named after the first Postmaster, William Bloxom.
By the 1900's, the Business District included an Undertaker and Wheelwright, a Restaurant, a General Store, a Brick Kiln, a Hotel and 4 Bars, which suffered when the Commonwealth of Virginia made liquor by the drink illegal in 1918.
During Bloxom's hey day in the late 30's and 40's, the Town would boast a Doctor's Office, a Barbershop, a Hardware Store-and-Feed store, 2 Banks, a Grocery Store and more.
In 1931, the Town celebrated the opening of its own School and Incorporated 1951. Four years later, Bloxom Volunteer Fire Company was founded.
As one person remembers, "I had the pleasure of growing up in Bloxom before it's great decline. I fondly remember the train whistling through the Town and the Old Depot, which now sits in Cape Charles, Virginia. I attended Bloxom school, which my father graduated from when it was the High School. My home was one of those elegant Victorians and I was actually Post Master for a time at the Post Office, which was located in one of the old Banks."
